Hugh Horton Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Born: Hugh Horton, Sr. was born about 1661. [1]

Married: Hugh Horton, Sr. is believed to have been married to Mary Snowdall.[2] This conforms with the naming of their son "Snodal Horton".[3]

Last Will and Testament:

Hugh Horton's Will was executed July 25, 1724 and witnessed by Patrick Ryon, Hugh Horton (son) and William Smith. In his Will, Hugh Horton (testator) made the following gifts:

First, to Snodal Horton, his son, several articles of personal and household property.
Second, to Hugh Horton, his son, "my Land & Plantation with the fee simple there to him & his heirs for ever." Hugh Horton was also named Executor of the estate of his father.
Third, to "my Daughter, Mary Latham," articles of personal property and "four my Cattle to be equally divided in quantity & quality between my Son, Hugh Horton, & my Daughter, Mary Latham."[4]
Fourth, to his "Grandson, William Latham," items of personal property, and
Fifth, the "remainder of my Estate of what kind nature or quality soever to my Son, Hugh Horton.

On November 25, 1724, the Will was presented to the Westmoreland County, Virginia court by his Executor, Hugh Horton, Jr. and proven upon the oaths of Patrick Ryon and William Smith, witnesses to the Will. Hugh Horton, Jr. was appointed Executor.[5]proven in Westmoreland County, Virginia on admitted to Probate by the Westmoreland County, Court on December 8, 1724 (8th die Xbris 1724).[3][6]

Death: Based upon the date of the admission to Probate of Hugh Horton Sr.'s Will, his date of death can be estimated to have occurred in late 1724. He died in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Research Notes

Some have Hugh Horton, Sr.'s wife as Anne Bell.

George W. Glass, in his book Stafford Co., Va., abstracts of deeds, wills, and court order books; v. 01 at p. 477 suggests that Tobias Horton was the father of Hugh Horton, but this is unlikely since Tobias Horton's Will listed as sons only Tobias and Robert Horton.

Hi Bob. I was just working on this profile. I tried to access your link, but I don't belong to Geni. If you have some sources for the date and location of birth and date (or any other information), could you add it to this profile? Thanks. Bob
