Obituary
MR. HORDERN'S DEATH.
WIDESPREAD REGRET.
IMMENSE FUNERAL.
Yesterday afternoon the last tributes of respect were paid to one of Sydney's greatest captains of industry, when the remains of Mr. Samuel Hordern were laid to rest in the Rookwood Cemetery. The death of Mr. Hordern has removed one of the most striking figures in the commercial world, as well as a highly-popular citizen of the State. By reason of the wider ramifications of the business to which he was the head, he was in direct touch with a very large number of industries and branches of commerce, just as his social activities brought him into personal contact with a broad range of people. However, since his death on Friday telegrams and other messages of sympathy and condolence have poured in upon the deceased gentleman's family from an amazingly wide circle, embracing practically every social, professional, and commercial interest through-out the Commonwealth. Most of these messages, while sympathising with the bereaved, made eulogistic reference to the qualities of the deceased. One telegram, which expressed the sentiments of many, put it:-"Australia has lost a patriot, Sydney her most enterprising son, and commerce a champion." Not the least striking were the great number of messages received from hospitals and other charitable institutions, which had signally benefited in the past by the deceased gentleman's munificence.....[6]
Samuel Hordern was buried at Rookwood General Cemetery, New South Wales.[7]
