Biography

William Hardstaff Hooley was born at Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England about 1831. He was baptised at St Andrew's Church, Skegby, Nottinghamshire on the 26th November 1832, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hooley[1]. He later named his father as Samuel Hardstaff, framework knitter.[2]

He married Alice Gent at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 11th September 1854.[3] William was a 20 year old bachelor and FWK. (framework knitter) The space for his father's name and occupation was crossed through. Alice was a 17 year old spinster and seamer, the daughter of James Gent, FWK. Witnesses were John Ghent and Mary Ann Lee.[4]

In 1861 William was a coal miner in Codnor, Derbyshire with wife Alice and 3 children. He was aged 28 and born in Sutton in Ashfield.[5]

On the 1871 census, William and Alice lived at Needham Street, Codnor with their seven children.[6]

He was widowed in 1879 and on the 7th June 1880, William married Mary Barker Parnell at St Paul's Church, Nottingham.[2] William was a 48 year old widower, and miner. His father was Samuel Hardstaff, FWK. Mary was of full age and a widow. She was the daughter of Richard Wilson, labourer.[7]

William seems to have been employed as a coal miner at Selston, in 1881, aged 50, along with his wife, Mary, aged 52. He claims to have been born in S.Felley [!?], and she in Fiskerton, Notts. They lived with six sons from William's previous marriage.[8]

In 1891, William claimed to be widowed again, although Mary Hooley was not dead at the time and had returned to Sutton in Ashfield. He was living at Ellen Terrace, Sharleston, West Yorkshire.[9]

By 1911, William Hooley lived at 27 Ellen Terrace, Sharlston, (giving his age as 75) in the household of his son George Hooley, born Codnor, with his wife Mary and their five children.[10] William gave his birthplace as Sutton in Ashfield, Notts.[11]

William died in 1918[12] and was buried at St Luke's Church, Sharlston on the 12th May 1918. His address at the time of death was recorded as 27 Ellen Terrace and his age was 79.[13]
