Biography

John (Jared) Hawley was born on 16 Apr 1747 in Preston, New London County, Connecticut to parents Samuel Hawley and Ruth Crandall. He married Hannah Rose on 10 Jun 1765 in New London, Connecticut. Children: Roswell, Elizabeth, Jared, Crandall, Charlotte, Thomas, William, Elijah Rose, Hannah, John W, Ruth, Lucinda. He died on 14 Jul 1825 in Rome, New York. He is buried in the Wright Settlement Cemetery in Rome, New York.

John Hawley served as a Private in the Revolutionary War under Col. James M Vernon, Rhode Island; Capt. Oliver Clark, and Capt. Peleg Matteson.

From the Hawley Record, p 423: "John, son of Samuel Holly (so spelled in Rhode Island and Vermont) and wife ____ Crandall, was born 16 April 1747. Went from Preston, Connecticut to Shaftsbury, Vermont, and then to Rome New York. He married Hannah Rose (died 1848 age 107). John was a farmer. He died in Rome about 1812 age 80."
