Obadiah Hawley was born on July 6, 1772 in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, son of Richard Hawley (1738–1825) and Prudence White (1737– ).

Obadiah married Betty Kimberly (born on June 2, 1772 in South Britain, Southbury, New Haven, Connecticut Colony; daughter of Nathaniel Kimberly and Kezia (Hurd) Treat).^[1] Their daughter was

• Esther Hawley (1812–1842).
• Lonzo (1797 ^[2]
