Job Harris was a South Australian store keeper, post master, hotelier and was closely associated with the discovery of gold at the Barossa Goldfields, the largest gold rush in the colony of South Australia.
Job was born on 22 July 1840 at Neath, Glamorgan, Wales.
Job Harris was a part of a family group (two parents, four children including Job aged 9) that migrated to South Australia on the Providence in 1849. His father worked as a brick maker at Burra but died in January 1851. His mother remarried in 1857 and the family moved to Willaston.
Job married Mary Hattam on 2 September 1862 at St Peter's church, Williamstown. He had purchased the Willaston Stores, and added a Post Office in 1864. They had seven children.
In 1867, Job acquired the licence to run the Sandy Creek Hotel. He remained its operator for the rest of his life. He was a key person in the discovery of the Barossa Goldfields in October 1868.
He passed away in 1882 at Sandy Creek. [1]
