James enlisted on 12 Jul 1862 in Pittsfield, Illinois, and served as a private in the 70th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry (Union) until he mustered out on 23 Oct 1862.[9]
On 10 Mar 1864, in Beardstown, Illinois,[10] he married Nancy Caroline "Carrie" Wiggins from Cass Co, Illinois, about 50 miles away from his home. It isn't known how they happened to meet. By 1870, they had two children, Allan Nathaniel (named after his two grandfathers) and James Thomas.[3]
According to family lore, James' wife contracted tuberculosis,[11] and passed away on 23 Dec 1871[12] at the age of 32, leaving him with two sons: 3 and 6.
In the 1870 census, James is identified as a physician,[3] but he was probably actually a physician-in-training, as he is listed in the class of 1869-70 at Missouri Medical College,[13] from which he graduated in 1874. He set up a practice in Lincoln County and served as a general practitioner there for over 40 years, retiring 1918.[14] His daughter, Ima, reported that when he was near the end of his life, he instructed her to burn his account books, because he did not want his patients to be bothered by collection attempts.[15]
Dr Harlow's children are remarkable for their longevity. Bessie died at 15, Allan at 51, but of the rest one was 79, three were in their 80's, two in their 90's and two surpassed 100! Dr Harlow passed away in Winfield, Missouri, on 14 Apr 1932 at the age of 93.[16]
