Thomas was born in 1830 and baptised on February 7, 1830 in Stockland (9 miles from Gittisham), Devon. He was the son of James Hardy and Elizabeth (Unknown) Hardy. [1].
In 1850 Thomas arrived in Australia on the ship ‘British Empire’. [2]
On May the 20th 1852, he married Joanna Hardy in Adelaide, South Australia. [3].
Thomas Hardy is widely regarded as the father of the South Australian wine industry. [4] Thomas made his first wine in 1857. He purchased 24 acres at Marion, South Australia in April 1862, he called the property "Brookside" and planted it with grapes. [5] By 1865 he was producing 64 000 litres of wine and by the mid 1870s this had increased to 240 000 litres. [6]
On September the 6th 1871 he married Eliza Hardy (daughter of Thomas Hardy) in Adelaide, South Australia.[7].
By 1887, Thomas’ sons entered the business, and Hardys Wines became Thomas Hardy & Sons. By 1900, Thomas Hardy and Sons was the largest winemaker in South Australia. [8]
He passed away in 1912 in Burnside, South Australia, Australia. [9].
There is a memorial erected at McLaren Vale in honor of Mr. Thomas Hardy. The monument commemorates the work of Thomas in his development of the wine industry. [10]
