Biography

Mary "Polly" Hall was born in 1791. She was the daughter of William Hall and Martha Suggs.[1] Polly Hall Garrison was named the only daughter in her father's will. This will was penned in 1826 and proved in 1827. Her husband William Garrison witnessed the document. Here is a transcription of William Hall's will, naming his only daughter, Polly Hall Garrison:

Will of William Henry Hall

Mary "Polly" Hall was married to William F Garrison circa 1813.[2] At the 1820 Census, The Garrison family had four children under the age of ten.[3] By the 1830 Census, Mary and her husband William Garrison had six children living in their household.[4] The last evidence for the William Garrison family in South Carolina is their presence in the York County Census of 1840.[5] Mary Hall Garrison is present as a small tick mark in these pre-1850 documents. Her youngest son, James Gillespie Garrison, was born in 1835 in York County, South Carolina. The wife of William Garrison is clearly named "Mary" in both the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, after the family moved to Georgia.[6][7]

The 1850 Census Household of William and Mary Hall Garrison

Mary "Polly" Hall is linked to her paternal grandfather, John Hall the DAR patriot, by comparing her grandfather's will[8] to her father's will and then to her uncle's will. Mary Garrison, the daughter of my brother William Hall" received a bequest in her uncle Major T Hall's 1854 will, probated at York County, South Carolina in 1857:[9]

Major Hall's Will, names brother William Hall's daughter Mary Garrison

Based upon the probate distribution of the Garrison estate in 1879, Mary Hall Garrison has been logically deduced to be the mother of the following seven children, who were all born in York County, South Carolina prior to 1830:

1 Nancy Hall Garrison McCain[10][11] Nancy Hall Garrison was born in 1814. She appears to have been the eldest child of Mary Hall Garrison. Nancy Hall Garrison was married to Alexander Moore McCain circa 1836 in either South Carolina or Georgia. Their first child was born in January of 1837 at Carroll County, Georgia.[12]
2 Unknown Female Garrison, who was married to J P Griffin.[13][14][15][16] Almost nothing is known of the Griffin family, except for the William F Garrison estate distribution share that went to her surviving husband and children. These people have not been located in Census records of South Carolina or Georgia.
3 Benjamin Jackson "B J" or "Jack" Garrison[17][18]
4 Martha "Catsey" Garrison Brasher[19]
5 Prudence H Garrison Hogan[20]
6 William Hall Garrison[21]
7 John Gillespie Garrison[22]

The Garrison family moved to Carroll County, Georgia by 1850.[23][24]

William Garrison died in 1860.[25] It is certain that Mary Hall Garrison was still living at that time, as the probate was postponed until her death. In the 1870 Census, Mary Hall Garrison is enumerated in the Carroll County, Georgia household of her son, John G Garrison.[26]

Mary "Polly" Hall Garrison passed away in 1879. At that time, her husband's estate was probated in Carroll County, Georgia.[27] Distributives shares in the Garrison estate were given to her six surviving children and to the children of her deceased daughter, who were surnamed Griffin, in December of 1879.
