Thomas Hall was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Brisbane Courier, Mon 18 Apr 1927:
Obituary
Numerous friends will regret to learn of the death early this morning of Mr T. M. Hall who for a great many years took a prominent part in the religious, commercial, municipal and political life of Queensland.
The late Mr Thomas Murray Hall was born on the Manning River (New South Wales) in 1859, the year that Queensland secured its separation from New South Wales and became a separate colony. Few citizens have so successfully combined commercial and public life as did the late Mr Hall. After leaving school he joined the old Sydney Insurance Company as a junior clerk and in the year 1880 after four years of experience and training he became chief clerk and accountant of the Imperial Insurance Company. Five years later he accepted the appointment of secretary to the New South Wales Protection Society attached to which were a number of important commercial secretaryships, including that of the Sydney Mercantile Provident Association. In 1887 he established the business of the New South Wales Mercantile Protection Society and also established a business of his own, known as the Hall Mercantile Agency. In 1888 he came to Brisbane to open a branch of the agency.
Like a great many more persons he intended to return to the South almost immediately but the days grew into weeks and weeks into months and so he remained in this city. Six years later he sold out his interests in Sydney and devoted his subsequent life to Queensland and to Queensland interests. Soon after settling down in Brisbane he became interested in municipal government and gave many years of valuable service to the old Sherwood Divisional Board of which he was chairman for three consecutive years. In 1890 he became an alderman of the Brisbane City Council and retained that position for about three years after which he retired so as to have more time to devote to his growing business and to politics.
For many years he was a member of the Legislative Council of Queensland, being one of the stalwarts of Liberalism, and one of the keenest and most consistent opponents of the maternalism of the Socialist Party. He was a vigorous debater, a keen and trenchant critic of the frenzied finance which has characterised so main years of Queensland's recent political history, and a consistent supporter of Nationalism. He was also a champion at all times of Protestantism, but was aggressive in that respect only when he believed the occasion needed such action. The late Mr Hall's life was active, vigorous and always directed towards what he believed would be beneficial to the community.
The late Mr. Hall leaves a widow and four children, one son and three daughters Mr W. M. Hall, Mrs. W. H. Bentley, Mrs A. R. Leslie and Miss Doris Hall.
The funeral leaves his late residence 'Delbowne', Donaldson street Corinda at 10 am to-morrow for St Matthew' s Church of England Cemetery, Sherwood.
