Biography

Thomas was born in Devonport, Devon in 1903. He was the only son of Royal Navy Officer Thomas Haley and his wife Kathleen.

In the 1921 census, Thomas can be seen living with his mother and sister at 54 James St, Devonport. His occupation was given as part-time boiler making, Naval building, and repair work at the Royal Navy Dockyard in South Devonport.

Thomas married in Devonport in 1927 to a local woman, Maud Irene Plaice. They had one son born in Devonport in 1928.

On 8 February 1935, Thomas (by then working as a gas manager) emigrated to Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa with his wife and son. Thomas and Maud had one more son, born in Onbekend, Cape in 1943. At some point thereafter, the couple divorced.
