Grace's father died when she was one year old. Her mother first remarried Francis Boggs (1840-1897), and then second to Richard David Edwards (1842-1939). Richard and his first wife, Mary Galyean (1844-1894), had had nine daughters and no sons.
By the time Grace first appears in a US Census (in 1900)[2], it was to a combined Edwards and Gwartney household. The family included her mother, stepfather, four Edwards step-sisters (ages 15 to 33) , and two older Gwartney siblings (including Grace, ages 11 to 20). All of the children at home in 1900 (from both families) were born in Benton Co AR.
Shortly after her 16th birthday, Grace married Clinton Wakefield Nichols (1885-1964) - a Galyean cousin of her stepsisters. They married in Pineville, McDonald Co, MO on 17 Jan 1906[3]. Pineville was just a few miles (across the state line) from their home in Hiwasse AR. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Kansas City KS, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Grace and Clint had six children; two sons and four daughters:
The 1910 US Census[4] lists Clint and Grace with their oldest three children. Clint's brother, Archie Herbert Nichols (1891-1967), was living with the family, as was Grace's first cousin, Grover C Wages.
In the 1920 US Census[5], Clint and Grace are living with all six of their children in Kansas City KS. They also all appeared in the 1925 Kansas State Census[6].
The entire family was documented for the last time all together in the 1930 US Census[7].
By 1940[8], only their never-married daughter, Leona, lived with them.
Clint passed away in 1964. Grace lived almost twenty more years before she died on 29 Mar 1983 in Kansas City KS[9]. She's buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City KS[10].
