spring knife cutler

John was born in 1841. He was the son of George Greenhough and Sarah Furniss. [1]

John was a master cutler who had his own small factory employing about half a dozen people. He won first prizes at the Crystal Palace exhibitions in London (in 1879, 1891 and 1884) for his spring knives - similar to 'Swiss army' knives. John had three brothers, William b.1838, George b.1845 (also a cutler), and Henry b.1835 and an older sister Sarah Ann b.1835. A copy of his grant of probate mentions a nephew Arthur Thompson who I have not been able to trace further. However, it seems that Arthur could be the son of his wife's sister, Sarah Bradbury, who married a Mr. Thompson.

John died in 1914.
