Joseph Goodhart is Notable.

Joseph Christian Goodhart was born on 9th February 1873 in Gilberton, South Australia (Australia). He was the son of Joseph Goodhart and Emma Smith. [1]

His parents' early deaths in 1887 and 1888 forced Joseph's secondary studies at St Peter’s College, Adelaide to be curtailed; he had to care for, and provide for, his three younger brothers. The fourteen year-old found employment at the John Martin department store in Adelaide, where he worked as a window dresser, display artist and ticket writer.

Whilst working as a draper in Port Pirie, Joseph met and courted Alice Humphris; marrying on 10th April 1900 in Port Pirie. [2] In 1906, the couple were living in Broken Hill, New South Wales, where Joseph worked for the drapers, Boan Brothers, carrying out similar duties to those he had performed at John Martin’s. By 1914 he had saved enough money to begin his own business, Goodhart’s Drapers in Argent Street, which flourished until 1938 when the property was sold to the chain store group Woolworths. It was also about 1914 that the children, or at leats their daughter, was sent to Adelaide for education.

Joseph was a prodigious painter, leaving many etchings that record a long-gone Australia; especially of districts such as Broken Hill and Silverton, Adelaide and Encounter Bay, and southern Tasmania. [3] Of course, the Tasmanian etchings indicate that he and Alice regularly visited their daughter, who was living and working in Hobart.

Joseph and Alice retired to Encounter Bay, 100 kilometres (62 miles) south of Adelaide, about 1936. There, he built a studio where he painted, etched, carved and modelled sculpture. Aged about 79 years, he passed away on 16th April 1952 in Encounter Bay. [4] He was survived by Alice, their daughter and youngest two sons, children-in-law, and grandchildren.
