Charles Godwin was born at Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire around 1791. He was baptised on 14 August 1791.[1]
He married Hannah Hern in Swinbrook on 10 January 1813 in the presence of Henry Secker and William Hern.[2] His marriage certificate says that at that time he was from Widford in the County of Gloucester.
They had a daughter Elizabeth Godwin born around 1814 at Swinbrook, Oxfordshire.
Another daughter Julianna was baptised on 14 May 1826 at Swinbrook.[3] Charles was a shepherd.
The 1841 census shows Charles in Swinbrook aged 45 with his wife Hannah aged 50, their daughter Juliana (15) and grandson Charles Cox aged 5.[4]
The 1851 census shows Charles (58, ag laborer) and Hannah (63) with Julianna (unmarried, 24, glover), Amos Rose (son-in-law, 34, ag laborer), Sarah Rose (wife [presumably of Amos], 34, glover), Amos Rose (3) and Michael Rose (11 months).[5]
The 1861 census shows Charles aged 67, his wife Hannah aged 71 and their grandson Charles Godwin Cox aged 24 living in Swinbrook.[6]
The 1871 census shows Charles Godwin aged 78 living in Swinbrook with son (presumably son-in-law) John Maisey (49, carter, born in Black Bourton), daughter Julia Maisey (44), grandson George Maisey (14, ploughboy) and granddaughter Jane Maisey (8).[7]
Charles died in the 2nd quarter of 1877.
