Ann Margaret Garrett daughter of Edward and Susannah, was born 11 February 1810 and baptised 3 June 1810 at Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, England. [1]

She emigrated to South Australia on the same ship as William Bickford, the Platina, arriving at Port Adelaide on 9 February 1839. [2]

They were married on 18 August 1839 at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide.[3]

Her husband passed away after a brief illness of only 3 days in 1850, Ann Margaret was pregnant at the time. She was determined to carry on her husband's business, a mother of 5 children, and with the help of chemists Edwin Page and Robert Hutton, the business flourished for another 14 years.

In 1864 she went into partnership with her son Harry, forming Bickford & Son. Seven years later in 1871 her son William joined the firm, now known as A. M. Bickford & Sons, famous in South Australia for their range of cordials.

She passed away age 66 on 24 January 1877 in Brighton, South Australia [4] and was buried in West Terrace Cemetery. [5] [6]

BICKFORD. On the 24th January, at Fairfield, Brighton, Ann M. Bickford, widow of the late William Bickford, chemist, Adelaide. [7]

Her last Will and Testament states that her estate was to be equally divided amongst her children Elizabeth Bickford, Mary Bickford and Edward Bickford (residing in New York). [8]

Hi Karyn,

Thanks for looking after this Australian notable! I'm not sure if you're aware, but the Australia Project has recently changed their Australian Notables categories. We are now moving all the profiles currently under the Australia, Notables category to one or more of the sub-categories - see Australia, Notables category for the sub-categories and Australian Notables for information on how to include an Australian Notable category as part of the Notables sticker. You can also check if you have any other profiles that need moving under this category by going to the category and choosing 'Limit to Watchlist' on the top RHS.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me,

Thanks so much! Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project
