John died March 24, 1855, in a letter from a nephew, John Forsythe of David County, Iowa, to his cousin, Thomas Forsythe in Fayette County, PA, he wrote, "Uncle John is dead. He was visiting his son, Thomas (Jefferson) Forsythe (1808-1892). John had just ate (sic) a hardy meal, walked out on the prairie a few rods from the house to see the cattle and dropped dead."
