Biography

Based on the birth of her earliest known child in 1654, Alice Flint was born before 1636, likely in England. Her father William Flint was recorded living in Salem in 1642 without his wife, suggesting that she and her mother and siblings may have migrated later.

At the __: 10: [Dec] 1652 court held at Salem: "Alice, daughter of William Flint, presented for wearing a silk hood. He was proved to be worth over 200li., and she was discharged."[1][2]

Alice married first Henry Bullock (junior); their son John was born Aug 1654 in Salem.[3]

A deed signed 22th: 6th mo: [Aug] 1657 by "Alice Bullock widdow with the consent of William Flint her father" sold land "wch did belong unto Henry Bullock Junr., late deceased."[4]

She must have married John Pickering not long after this deed; their children's births (except John) were recorded at Salem:[5]

  1. John, birth not recorded, named as eldest son in John's will; if the age inscribed on his headstone is correct, he would have been born about 1658[2]
  2. Jonathan, s. John and Ales, 27: 7 m: [Sep] 1660
  3. Joseph, s. John and Ales, Sept. 9, 1663
  4. Benjamin, s. John and Ales, Jan. 15, 1665
  5. Sara, d. John and Ales, 7: 7 m: [Sep] 1668
  6. William, s. John and Ales, 11: 11 m: [Feb] 1670[/71]
  7. Elizabeth, d. John and Ales, 7: 7 m: [Sep] 1674
  8. Hanna, d. John and Ales, 2: 5 m: [Jul] 1677

Her husband was named as "my son John Pickeringe" in William Flint's 1671 will.[2][6]

John Pickering "senior" of Salem wrote his will 3 May 1694; it was proved 21 May 1694. In it he names sons John, Benjamin, and William; unmarried daughters Elizabeth and Hannah; wife Alice; and grandchildren John and Hannah Buttolph (and other unnamed grandchildren).[2] Sons Jonathan and Joseph are not mentioned (nor are their deaths recorded in Salem).[7]

On 22 Aug 1696, "Alice Flintt relict widow of William Flintt late of Salem Decd... for the loue & afection that I ye said Alice fflintt doe bear vnto my daughter Alice Pickering & more especialy for & in Consideration of her my said Dear daughters great Trouble cost & charge in keeping & maintaining me The sd Alice Flintt in my old age when I were not able to help my Selfe & for my said Daughters obligacon to me so to doe during my natural life..." deeded land and belongings to Alice Pickering.[2][8]

The 23 May 1711 will of Alice Flint's brother, Edward Flint, bequeathed land to "my kinsman John Bullock" describing the land as "now in the hands of my sister Alice Pickering".[9]

Death & Estate

"Alice Pickering of Salem... widow" signed a deed 4 Mar 1712/13 granting land in Salem, "it being part of that Land giuen me by my Mother," to the children of her daughter Hannah Palmer, deceased, along with other items to them and to daughter Elizabeth Browne and her children. Immediately following this deed is a release dated 13 May 1713 by "John Pickering yeoman Benjamin Pickering mariner William Pickering mariner all of Salem... all sons of Mr. John & Mrs. Alice Pickering both late of Salem deceased," relinquishing their rights in the said land.[2][10] This indicates Alice had died some time between the two records.

The estate of "Alice Pickering, relict widow of John Pickering, late of Salem," intestate, was probated 6 Jan 1723/24 (there's no indication why it took so long).[2][11]

Research Notes

Some secondary sources[12] have reported that Alice (Flint) Pickering was the daughter of William Flint by an unknown first wife; however, the 1696 deed by Alice Flint naming her daughter Alice Pickering makes it more likely that William had only one wife, Alice, who was the mother of all his children.
