William was born about 1835.
He enlisted in the British Army and served as a Colour Sergeant in the 14th Regiment of Foot. His regimental number was 250. He arrived in New Zealand with his regiment in 1860 and left with his regiment in 1866. He served in the New Zealand Wars and was awarded the New Zealand Medal.[1]
He was involved in the provenance of a patu paraoa (whalebone hand club), likely sourced from one of the battles. He gifted it to his commander James Alexander.[2]
