Lieutenant General Hector Geoffrey Edgar CB CBE was born on 31st October 1903 in Mount Korong, Victoria, Australia. He was the younger son of Thomas George Edgar and Bessie Trotman. [1]
Hector entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon, after completing his formal schooling. He graduated as a Lieutenant. [2]
In 1929, Hector married Margaret Cooper in Victoria. [3]
He volunteered for overseas service on 17th April 1942 by transferring from the militia to the Second Australian Imperial Force. [4]
After the war, he was involved in the planning for the Long Range Weapons Establishment in the late 1940s; and served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff (1954–58), General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command (1958–60), and GOC Eastern Command (1960–63). He retired from the army on 31st October 1963, his sixtieth birthday, as a Lieutenant General. Hector's older brother, Cedric, also made a career of the Australian Army, retiring as a Major General. He passed away in 1978, aged 75 years, at Balwyn, Victoria. [5]
