Biography

Unnamed Infant Duke died young.

This stillborn son of John Ross "J.R." Duke and Debra Gale McCarty was delivered on May 18, 1978 at Memorial Hospital in Marshall, Texas. He is buried next to his grandparents in Clayton, Texas.[1]

His mother went into delivery well before his due date. They rushed to Memorial Hospital in Marshall (and got pulled over by the police during the drive), but he was too premature to survive birth that early. Her next child—who probably would have never been born had this one survived—also came early (14 months later) and was premature by about 6 weeks, but he was able to survive. By the time her last child was on the way, the doctors put her on bed rest to make sure he would make it to full-term.[2]

Big brother, I probably wouldn't be here if you had survived, but I wonder what it would have been like to know you. My first child was born at 31 weeks and was only 2 lbs 7 oz, and she's a perfect little 3rd grader right now. In a different time, maybe they could have saved you also.
