OBITUARY
"OUR CENTENARIAN,"
MRS. M. A. MOTT.
By the death at Macclesfield last week of Mrs. Mary Ann Mott the South loses its only centenarian and the colony the oldest woman of whom there is record. She was 101 years and two months old, having been born on Christmas Day of 1793, as shown by the church register at East Hanningfield, Eng., a copy of which was sent out by the local rector to Mr. R. Barr Smith, of Mount Barker, who took an interest in the venerable resident in this district. It was commonly understood years ago that Mrs. Mott had then completed the century, but the tendency in such cases is to exaggerate a little, and the official document put the matter out of doubt. The fact remains that the deceased had been entitled for more than a year to the name of centenarian, and the attainment of such an exceptional age is worthy of special note.
The late Mrs. Mott arrived in South Australia, by the Rajahstan in February, 1840, so that she had just completed her 55th year as a colonist. Among her fellow-passengers were Mrs. Edwards, of Murray Bridge, and Mrs. Carraill, of Mount Pleasant, both of whom died within a few days of each other some years ago. She settled early at Macclesfield, marrying Mr. Mott, and remained there to the end of her days. Late in life she made a second matrimonial venture but it was not a fortunate one like the first, and she renounced the name of Webb and retained that of her first husband. She had in all 14 children, and of these the following eight survive their mother:—Mrs. Hannah Wyatt (the eldest) and Mrs. William Gratwick, of Macclesfield, Mrs. Prouden, of Lake Plains, and Messrs. Joseph Mott, of Hamilton (Vic.), Amos and William, Mott, of Bordertown, James Mott, of Belvidere, and David Mott, of Macclesfield. The grandchildren number 50 and the great-grandchildren 184, while there are 20 representatives of the fifth generation, so that the living descendants total no fewer than 262. Many of these are scattered over this and the other colonies, but a large number are settled in Macclesfield and the neighboring districts, several relatives being resident in Mount Barker. Throughout her hundred years of life Mrs. Mott had almost uniformly good health, and it was only latterly that she suffered somewhat from asthma. She kept her eyesight and hearing to the very end, and when more active occupations had to be laid aside the industrious old lady occupied herself with patchwork and other sewing. The fact has been more than once mentioned, but its interest must excuse its repetition, that last Ootober Mrs. Mott was the successful plaintiff in a civil case at the Mount Barker Court (though she did not make a personal appearance), being no doubt the oldest litigant in the world. Since she was left a widow she had lived with one or other of her daughters and of late years had formed one of the household of her son-in-law, Mr. W. Gratwick, of Macclesfield.
