Lucy Fanny May Donaldson was born on 21st May 1885 in Charleville, Queensland (Australia). She was the daughter of Alexander Donaldson and Sarah Moore. [1]
Lucy married Albert French in 1909 in Queensland. [2] The couple made their home in Crows Nest, north of Toowoomba on Queensland's Darling Downs, where Albert worked as a barber.

After losing her older daughter, Doreen in 1935 in her late teens, Lucy lost her two younger sons, Jack (AIF) and Gordon (RAAF), in 1942 and 1943 respectively during the Second World War, Jack in Milne Bay, Papua and Gordon over Germany. Jack was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
Having been widowed for 32 years, Lucy passed away, at 103 years of age, on 14th June 1988 in Crows Nest and is buried in Crows Nest Cemetery. [3] She was survived by her remaining son, eighty year-old Eric.
