Biography

William Dickinson lived in Appalachia, in Virginia (now West Virginia).

William Dickinson, Jr., son of William Dickinson Sr.,[1] was born in in Bedford County, Virginia.[2] about 1795.[3][4]

He married Mary Church Grey,[2] daughter of John P., on 8 November 1825.[5]

Their son John Quincy Dickinson was born 20 November 1831 in Bedford County, Virginia.[2] The 1860 census finds William and his son living in Bedford County:[3]

William died 10 November 1881 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia.[6]

Dickinson & Shrewsbury

By the 1830s, William Dickinson Jr. (1798-1881) became active in the business created by William Dickinson (1772-1861) and Joel Shrewsbury (1779-1859) - William Jr.'s father and Sr.'s brother-in-law were the founding partners of the salt-works firm of Dickinson & Shrewsbury.[7]
By the 1850s, his sons Henry C. Dickinson (1830-1871) and John Q. Dickinson (1831-1925) were also playing active roles in the salt works.[7]

Will

William Dickinson of Kanawha County, West Virginia left a will dated 1 March 1881 that was proved 6 December 1881.[8]

  • Son Henry C. Dickinson (deceased) - his six children
  • Granddaughters Mary Cobb, Sally Cobb, and Martha Cobb

The first item of his will addressed the disposition of his interest in the Kanawha Valley Bank, which he later refers to as "the Kanawha Valley Bank; that bank having bought it of Col William H. Edwards in collecting of him a debt he owed said bank." Other items address land he owned.
Executors: my son John L. Dickinson, my nephew Charles C. Lewis, and my two grandsons, Roemer Winkler and Henry Winkler
