The term "ap David" means "son of David" & was in use prior to surnames being established.
Harry Alexander Davis in his book “The Davis Family (Davies and David) in Wales and America: Genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania” published a lengthy introduction to the family of Evan Davis on page 9 of his book.[1] The text is reproduced in the Research Notes section below.
Evan (David) Davis Sr. was first married to Jane Rees on 12 January 1711 in Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.[2]
Jane Rees, daughter of William Rees and Mary Lewis, was born about 1693 in Merion, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Evan David and Jane Rees had the following children:
She died on 1 December 1723 at the age of 30 in New Castle County, Delaware. She left a will dated 4 January 1774.
After the unexpected death of his first wife, Jane Rees, Evan (David) Davis, Sr. married second, Jane Morgan in 1724 in New Castle, Delaware.[3]
Jane Morgan was born about 1700. She died on 14 May 1740 at the age of 40 in New Castle, Delaware.[4]
Evan David and Jane Morgan had the following children:
Evan Davis left a will dated 21 August 1748 and died before the end of the year. His second wife, Jane Davis, a widow, and son, Thomas Davis, probated his will in 1748 (Wills, Lib. K1, fol. 168). [Will Book K1, page 168].[5]
Here is the abstract of his will: Evan David, Senior. Pen. Hd. Aug. 21, 1748._____, 1748. G. 207. Eldest son, John David; son, Joshua David; daug. Margaret; wife Jane David; son, Thomas. Exc. wife, Jane David; Son, Thomas David.
3 EVAN (2) DAVID, SENIOR (Morgan 1.) Born in all probability in Merion Township, Penn. 1685-6. He married (1) 1711-12 Jane —— — (circum¬ stances indicate she was born Rees). They moved to New Castle county, Delaware, about 1723. He was not a member of the Pencader church but was an Independant. Jane died Dec. 1723 and he married (2) 1724 Jane, daughter of Watkin Morgan, and a granddaughter of John Morgan. (Deeds, Lib. Wl, fol. 400.) On 1 Feb. 1724 Rees Evans deeded him 125 acres of land, part of the estate of John Lewis, deeded to Rees Evans 21 Nov. 1720. (Deeds, Lib. Gl, fol. 4.65.) On 11 May 1741 Thomas and Susannah John deeded him a parcel of land, part of a tract deeded to Thomas John by William Davis and David Evans. (Deeds, Lib. Nl,fol. 168.) According to family records John, the eldest son, left home when about 16 years of age on account of uncongenial environment; David and Benjamin received financial assistance when they removed to South Carolina in 1739; Evan Jr. married against the wishes of his father and caused an estrangement never reconciled. Evan dated his will 21 Aug. 1748 and died before the end of the year as this will was probated by his widow and son Thomas in 1748. (Wills, Lib. Gl,fol. 207.) Jane David dated her will 4 Jan. 1774 and died prior to Sept. 1774. This will probated 27 Sept. 1774 by her son John, who was sole executor. (Wills, Lib. Kl, fol. 168.)
