Marjorie (Dalgarno) McCredie was born in New South Wales, Australia
Marjorie C Dalgarno was born at Waverley, NSW on 30 June 1901, the daughter of Lucie G Holdsworth and Charles R Dalgarno.[1] The first of four children, Marjorie had one sister and two brothers.
Marjorie was a great granddaughter of Harriet (Hatfield) Jones.
Marjorie Dalgarno gained an exhibition to the Faculty of Medicine at Sydney University and, assisted by a Scholarship, entered the Women's College.[2]

Married Life

Marjorie announced her engagement to Harold McCredie in July 1928.[3]
Marjorie C Dalgarno, daughter of Lucie G Holdsworth and Charles R Dalgarno, married Harold A McCredie, son of Katherine Mitchell and Andrew McCredie, in Sydney, NSW on 1 December 1928.[4][5] Their children included:
  1. Andrew Dalgarno McCredie (1930-2006)[6][7]
  2. Janet McCredie (1935-2023) and
  3. James McCredie (1937-2023).[8][9]
Marjorie is mentioned, with her father and siblings, in her mother's death notice.
Marjorie Clare (Dalgarno) McCredie passed away at Darling Point, NSW on 14 January 1983.[10][11] She was survived by:
  • her brothers James and Kenneth
  • her husband Harold
  • her three children.

Professional Career

Marjorie (Dalgarno) McCredie is Notable.
Marjorie graduated in Medicine in 1925[2][12] and commenced as a Resident at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the X-Ray department.[2][12]
In 1929, Dr Dalgarno set up her own radiological practice in the family home at Campsie.[2][13][14]
In 1939, Dr Dalgarno was appointed to Rachael Foster Hospital and the Renwick Hospital for infants.[2][12]
In 1949, Dr Dalgarno opened a practice in Macquarie Street with Dr Mollie Cronin.[2][12]
In the early 1950's Dr Dalgarno began using mammography for the diagnosis of breast lumps at the Breast Clinic at Rachael Foster.[12] She realised that mammography could be used to find early stage cancers that could not be detected through palpation.[2] Sadly, it took 30 years for technology and engineering was sufficiently developed to implement her vision for general population screening.[12]
Several Breast Screen Services have named their one of their mobile busses after Dr Dalgarno.[15]
The Marjorie Dalgarno Medical Scholarship, initiated in 2011, was named in her honour.
