Elijah Cummings served as the U.S. Representative from Maryland's 7th district from 1996 until his death in 2019. After his death he became the first African American member of Congress to lie in state in the Capitol.[1]
Elijah Eugene Cummings was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1951. He was the third of six children of sharecroppers Robert Cummings and Ruth Cochran. He descends from the Cummings family of Clarendon, South Carolina.
He married twice. In addition to his daughter by his first wife, Elijah had two more children.[1][2]
