Edward Charles Edmund Cracknell was born at Chatham Town, Kent, England, on the 22nd of May 1831 and baptised on the 21st of September 1831. He was the son of Edward Edmund Cracknell and Emma Thompson.[1][2]
In the 1851 England census, Edward was living at St Pancras, Middlesex, England. He was working as a mercantile clerk.[3]

Edward Cracknell designed and supervised the wiring, for electrically ignited blasts, during the construction of the Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow, Colony of New South Wales, across the Blue Mountains, shifting 80,000 tons of rock with two blasts.[13][14]
Edward Cracknell passed away at his home, at Woollahra, Colony of New South Wales, on the 14th of January 1893.[15]

The body of the late Mr. Edward Charles Cracknell, Superintendent of Electric Telegraphs, and Leutenaut-Colonel commanding the Sub-marine Miners, whose death took place early last Saturday morning was, on Sunday, interred with full military honours, and in the presence of a great assemblage, in Waverley Cemetery. The deceased gentleman was born at Rochester, England, in 1831.......................................The deceased gentleman leaves surviving him his widow and a family of one son and three daughters.Two of the daughters are married, one to Mr.A. C. F. Webb, and the other to Mr. E. C. Colquhoun. The deceased gentleman's son — Mr. E. W.Cracknell — was unable to attend the funeral. The news of his father's death reached him in Melbourne on Saturday morning, and there being no through train he could not get across in time...............................................................
