Sir Alan Cooley CBE was a senior Australian public servant and policymaker.
Alan Sydenham Cooley was born on 17th September 1920 in Burwood, Victoria, Australia. He was the only son, with three older sisters and one younger, of Hector Cooley and Ruby Catanach. [1]
Alan married Nancie Chisholm Young in 1949 in Victoria. [2]
Alan began his Commonwealth Public Service career in the Department of Supply, rising up the ranks to become Secretary of that department in 1966. Between 1971 and 1977, Alan was Chairman of the Public Service Board. In 1977, he was appointed Secretary of the newly-formed Department of Productivity.
In the New Year Honours 1972 Alan was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) 'in recognition of his service as Chairman of the Public Service Board'. [3] He was created Knight Bachelor in the Queen's Birthday Honours 1976 'iIn recognition of service to the public service'. [4]
Aged 76 years, he passed away on 13th April 1997 in Sydney, New South Wales. [5]
