Nathaniel was born in 1826 in Theddingworth, Leicestershire, England. He was the son of George Collis and Elizabeth Haines.

From news articles the first mention of Nathaniel Collis is for stealing apples in 1839, followed by various incidents and actually being stabbed in 1854 (from which he recovered).
P.C. Beckwith, of Husbands Bosworth, charged Nathaniel Collis and Edward Arnsby, of Theddingworth, with being drunk and creating breach of the peace at the former place on June 11th. From 1851 onwards Nathaniel appears in the papers about once a year for poaching, usually rabbits.
John Clarke, Nathaniel Collis, and Thomas Collis, labourers, of Theddingworth, were charged by Thomas Bailey, special constable, with being drunk and disorderly at Husbands Bosworth.
