John Carleton Collins, 73, of Glen Allen, Henrico, Virginia, formerly of Millersville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday February 5, 2015. [1]
He was born in Paris, Henry County, Tenn., on Nov. 26, 1941, to Homer Collins and Patti Heffernan Collins. He attended Lee Elementary School and Atkins Porter Middle School in Paris and graduated from Treadwell High School in Memphis, Shelby County, Tenn.
John attended the University of Michigan. He then served in the U.S. Army. When his Army career ended, he began a long history at the National Security Agency (NSA) in Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He worked at the NSA from 1964 to 1996. He was an NSA employee at the time of his October 22, 1966 wedding to Ann C. Griffin in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA.[2]
He was survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann (Griffin) Collins; and two daughters, Susan and Jenna. He is also survived by the greatest joys of his life, his two grandsons.
John was very active in any community where he lived. While living in Maryland, he was an officer and president of the Indian Landing Community Association and the Severn Cross Roads Foundation in Millersville, Md. While living in Glen Allen, he served as an officer and president of the Virginia Center East Owners Association.
He took pride in his love of genealogy, reading military and espionage fiction books and maintaining his extensive library from his den. He was a great fan of his grandsons’ striker soccer teams.
John participated in a 2007 Collins Y-DNA Study at Relative Genetics. His Y DNA Haplogroup was determined to be I, not R1b which was apparently entered for his profile.

Our vision is to build a collaborative tree with one profile per person. The farther back you go, it's likely you will find duplicate profiles to link into, so it's a good idea to do a search before you create a new profile.
Do you have Royal Ancestors? If so, they are already here! Please contact the EuroAristo Project to discuss connecting your family line to their already existing profiles.
WikiTree strives to be a fun, collaborative, productive site. It's also different than what many people are used to. Please take advantage of the Help Menu in the upper right hand corner, our G2G Forum and of course, our Mentors :)
Do you have any questions I can help with?

VERY IMPORTANT: The more documents, sources, dates, and locations you provide on the profiles you create, the stronger your branches and our mutual global tree will be. If you don't know the correct date, please estimate using before or after.
