Biography

Calvin Collins was born about 1810 in Tennessee, based on place of birth given in the 1850 Federal Census, Clay Co., Kentucky.

Calvin Collins married his first wife, Jane Barton on the 2nd of January, 1836, in Knox Co., Kentucky. Samuel Barton is listed as being the bondsman on the marriage bond.

Calvin and his family were living in Clay Co., Kentucky in the 1840 Federal Census. The household consisted of: 1 male under 5; 1 male 10 thru 14; and 1 male 20 thru 29; 1 female under 5; and 1 female 30 thru 39.

Calvin is in the 1850 Federal Census in Clay Co., Kentucky, but Jane is not listed in the household, so it is assumed she died before Calvin's household was enumerated in August, 1850.

Calvin and Jane Barton Collins were the parents of the following children based on children listed in Calvin's household in the 1850 Federal Census, Clay Co., Ky: Renda Collins, born ca. 1837, Ky; Amos Collins, born ca. 1839, Ky; Matilda Collins, born ca. 1840, Ky; Mary Collins, born ca. 1844, Ky; and Mayvale Collins, born ca. 1846, Ky.

Calvin served in the Civil War in the Union Army, as a Private in 14th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry. The 14th Regiment, Union Cavalry, was organized at Mt. Sterling, Ky and mustered in on 6 November, 1862. Mustered out 16 September, 1863 to 24 March, 1864.

Calvin and Elizabeth Wilder were the parents of the following children, based on children in the 1860 & 1870 Federal Census': Nelson Collins, born ca. 1852, Ky; Jane "Jenney" Colllins, born ca. 1855, Ky; Sally (Malinda in 1870 census) Collins, born ca. March, 1860, Ky; Hannah Collins, born ca. 1863, Ky; Nancy Collins, born ca. 1864, Ky; William Collins, born ca. 1867, Ky; and Mary A. Collins, born ca. 1870, Ky.

In 1878, Leslie Co., Kentucky was formed from parts of Clay, Harlan and Perry Counties, Kentucky.

Calvin and Elizabeth appear in the 1880 Federal Census in Leslie Co., Kentucky.

Calvin died sometime after the 1880 Federal Census and before the 1900 Federal Census. It is believed he died in Leslie Co., Ky.
