Biography

Daniel Chartres [Charters] was born in 1837 in Antrim, Ireland. His parents were Daniel and Jane Chartres.^[1]

He emigrated with his family to Australia, arriving at New South Wales on 18 Oct 1840 on the ship Isabella.^[1]

Daniel Chartres married Emeline Boss in 1871 in Bathurst, New South Wales.^[2]

Daniel Charters died on 14 June 1919, aged 84 years. He was buried at Grenfell Cemetery, Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia.^[3]

DANIEL CHARTERS -(FLASH DAN) BUSHRANGER

Daniel Charters known as "Flash Dan" was the good friend of Ben Hall, also one of the gang that took part in the gold escort robbery at Eugowra in June 1862. This was the biggest robbery in the history of the Colony. In exchange for his freedom he turned Queen's evidence againts the gang. He did not implicate his best friend Ben Hall or John O'Mealy.

MR. DAN CHARTERS One of the oldest and best known identities of this district, about the neighbourhood of which he had been for the past seventy years - Mr. Daniel Charters - passed away on Saturday morning in his 85th year. Up to quite recently deceased had followed his occupation of droving, which for so long a time he had been in request by virtue of his experience and reliability. In the middle sixties he figured prominently, and was chief witness for the Crown in proceedings against the Eugowra escort robbers, and his experience of those stirring times would perhaps have made the most interesting of the many narratives presented, but nothing would induce him to tell of the things he knew or recount the scenes in which he had participated; neither he nor Fordyce would have a word to say. For over half a century the deceased pursued with credit and success the calling to which he was so fitted, and enjoyed the confidence of his employers, The funeral was on Sunday.
