Sir Frederick Chaney KBE AFC was an Australian politician, serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 1955 to 1969. He was Minister for the Navy from 1964 to 1966. After leaving federal politics, he served as Administrator of the Northern Territory from 1970 to 1973 and Lord Mayor of Perth from 1978 to 1982. He served as an officer in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War.

Frederick Charles Chaney was born on 20th October 1914 in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. He was the only son (with five older sisters) of Frederick Charles Chaney and Rose Stout. [1] After attending State and Catholic schools, Fred won a scholarship to attend Christian Brothers' College, Perth; a school that later became Aquinas College.[2]

He later became a school teacher.

Fred married Mavis Bond, a fellow teacher, on 1st January 1938 in Highgate Hill, Western Australia. [3] The couple had four sons and three daughters:

Served in the Royal Australian Air Force 1941-1945
No.16 Air Observation Post Flight

On 17th August 1941, Fred was commissioned in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for service during the Second World War. He attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the No.16 Air Observation Post Flight, serving in Papua, New Guinea and Borneo. The war over, and won, he resigned his commission on 22nd October 1945. [4] He was awarded the Air Force Cross (AFC) on 25th June 1946. [5] For his war service he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.

Following the war, Fred served his nation in another direction, through government, serving as the member for Perth in the House of Representatives from 1955 to 1969. He was Minister for the Navy from 1964 to 1966.

After leaving federal politics, he served as Administrator of the Northern Territory from 1970 to 1973, during which time he was a strong advocate for Aboriginal land rights, and Lord Mayor of Perth from 1978 to 1982.[6]

Fred was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year Honours 1970 in recognition of his service to politics. [7] In the New Year Honours 1982 he was created Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in recognition of service to the community. [8]
