My name is David Lynn Chaney. My friends call me Lynn. I was born in and raised in a small town, Jeanerette, Louisiana which is in South Louisiana.
My Parents were Edgar Lincoln Chaney, Jr. and Marguerite Mary Junca. My Grandparents were Edgar Lincoln Chaney, Sr. and Mabel Irene Ring.
Jeanerette, LA was a great place to grow-up in. It was a friendly place where you knew almost everyone that lived there.
My Great Grandfather George Henry Ring was Mayor of Jeanerette for 2 terms. After he died, his wife Rose Clothilde Gavaret married John Durocher who also became Mayor and My Grandfather Edgar Lincoln Chaney Sr. was the Mayor of Jeanerette for 4 terms and actually died in office in 1953.
I began researching my Chaney Surname about 55 years ago and became hooked on Genealogy. Back in those days before the internet, it was a lot harder to obtain information. I was lucky that I lived many years with my Grandparents being alive and able to get information from them. I also had some cousins who were researching the Chaney line which at the time lead me in the wrong direction. I will explain this later. The Chaneys had lots of stories and many pictures of the family. We lived across the street from my Grandparents and spent much of my time there. Their home was built by my Grandmothers father who was George H. Ring. I have a lot of pictures over there home which changed a few times over many years. As a young kid, I would play on the back roof which was flat and also in the attic. I can remember finding my Great Grandfathers signature on one of the big Cypress beams in the attic. How I wish I would have been able to get a copy of it or after it was torn down, the actual board. I did get a board from the house to make a mantle for my fireplace.
My research in the last few years have changed to DNA. I find it to be interesting but complicated to me at times. I don't learn as fast as I used to. I will list my problem below and if anyone can give me any help, I would appreciate it.
Over the last few years, I have taken DNA test with 6 different companies. (Ancestry, 23amdMe, My Heritage, Living DNA, and CRIgenetics). I was puzzled by the fact that I did not receive one match to my Chaney Surname. Then I tried Family Tree DNA test including the Big Y DNA test which passes from father to son. When the results came in, still no matches to a single Chaney. I would get matches up to Francis Marion's 2nd Wife Martha Ann Welch but no Chaneys. When I run a search on my matches from FTDNA, I get mainly Erwin, Irwin, Irvine, Ervine, and Irving with very very many in the 0-3 GD. I even joined the Irwin Clan Surname Project and they helped me understand what could have happened. One of my Erwin Ancestors may have been adopted or taken in by a Chaney family. All of my paper research of my “Chaney” Ancestors over the last 55+ years takes me back to 1740 in Kentucky which I feel is 100% accurate with sources for all my records. Only problem is I have Erwin DNA and Chaney Paper Research line. FamilyTree DNA helpers said that this probably happened in the 1600's when people from Ireland or Scotland migrated to this country. It would never show up without DNA test.
I have talked to the support team at Family Tree DNA and they told me several things that I needed to do so I have been trying to learn more about DNA because my knowledge is very limited. This is one of the reasons I joined this WiKi Tree and hope that I will get some help with this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a confirmed DNA match to any of the male descendants of Obediah Chaney Sr m. Elizabeth Burton, who settled in Green County, Kentucky, please let me know. This could effect both of us. I feel that up to 1740, my research and sources are accurate.
