Biography

James married Rosetta Plume in Richmond on 25 April 1855. They had at least seven children: Rosa, Helen, John, Walter, Edward, James and Mary.

He enlisted from Richmond as a Private in Company "A" ("Otey-Walker's Battery"), 13th Battalion, Virginia Light Artillery on 22 March 1862. He was discharged at some point soon thereafter, and in 1863, was serving as Chief Clerk of the James River & Kanawha Canal Company.[1]

He enlisted as a Private in Company "I", 3rd Regiment, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 16 July 1864, and served until at least November 1864. After the War, he resumed his occupation as a clerk.[2]

James was 58 at his death, per cemetery records. His grave in the Albert Snead plot, near his parents, wife and several of his children, was marked in November 2022 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery" and of the Virginia Division, Children of the Confederacy.
