About sixty soldiers served as Australian Army generals during the Second World War (different secondary sources list differing numbers), five of whom lost their lives during service: three to aircraft accidents and two to illness. Not all generals become commanders of divisions or corps. Many fill important staff positions that are crucial to ultimate victory. The most senior soldier was Sir Thomas Blamey, who was promoted to Field Marshal in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief. The most well-known, arguably, are those who served as general officers commanding the Australian Imperial Force divisions: 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th; general officers commanding the 1st and 2nd Army Corps; and the chiefs of the general staff. Australia's oldest general was the illustrious leader General Sir Brudenell White, at 63 years of age at the outbreak of the war. Eighteen received knighthoods in recognition of their service.
