Austin County is located in southeastern Texas, west of Houston. Formed in 1836 and is one of the original 23 counties in Texas. The county is named for Stephen Fuller Austin, who facilitated the Anglo American colonization of Texas and is known as the "Father of Texas." Its seat is Bellville. Austin County is included in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Not to be confused with the state capital and city of Austin in Travis County, Texas.
