Elizabeth's maiden name remains unproven by any documentation!

Biography

Elizabeth (mnu) married Samuel Gann (I) in about 1726. They were early colonists in the northern neck of the Colony of Virginia. The area, later known as Frederick County, extended from settlements on the Atlantic Coast to a vast uncharted wilderness. Only sturdy, hardy people were brave enough to venture into the interior of this land and carve out a home so far from civilization.

History of Frederick County, Virginia Frederick County began to be settled in 1732. However, the earliest documentation found to date only shows that the family was living in Frederick County by 1748, but might have lived there for a few years prior to that, likely between 1744-1748. VIRGINIA LAND RECORDS– "December 14, 1752, Land surveyed for Aaron Price, in Frederick County, Virginia. Surveyor, Robert Rutherford, Chainmen, Sam'l and Nathan Gann." (Samuel (I) and son, Nathan.)

In a 22 Mar 1764 sworn statement from widow, Elizabeth Gan, she said she sold to Andrew Longacre of Frederick County, Virginia, a certain tract of land lying under the North Mountain on the drains of Cedar Creek, joining the property of John Blair. Witnesses: Adam Gan, Joseph Longacre.

Elizabeth and Samuel (I) had seven known children, five sons and two daughters. Older children had married and grandchildren arriving when Samuel (I) died in 1760. Known children of Elizabeth and Samuel and Gann:

  • Adam Gann 1727-1812

  • Clement Gann 1733-1735
  • John Gann 1736-1817

About the Gann Historical Society and Library:

Originally, in the 1980s, there was a loose organization of Gann descendants in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texas and New Mexico who researched and shared family data, as they knew it. The groups met regularly in local libraries, newsletters were published, family reunions held, and memorial services took place in scattered cemeteries over the country. Much of the history of Elizabeth and Samuel Gann (I) and their descendants would not have been recorded without the dedicated work of these researchers.

Today, that lose informal group of descendants has become the Gann Historical Society and Library. It was founded as a 501(3c) organization that is dedicated to researching and documenting the Ganns and associated family descendant lines. In modern times, the Society utilizes not only paper documentation resources, now available, but also genetic genealogy to break down many brick walls that had previously stumped Gann descendants. The Society continues to exist today through membership and contributions of descendants and they continue to do research.

The maiden surname on this profile should be changed to unknown. Carter has never been proven through documentation or DNA studies. It needs to be changed so that it doesn't spread erroneous information. Although, the surname Carter was never documented, it has spread across all genealogy sites (mainly due to Carter being added as her name on Findagrave) and needs to be fixed. Thank you for helping to fix this issue. KayDee
