George Lyndon Carpenter was born on 20 June 1872 at Millers Forest, near Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, Australia. His father was Tristan de Cunha Carpenter and his mother Hannah (Worboys) Carpenter.[1]
He married Minnie Lindsay Rowell in 1899 in Victoria, Australia. [2]
George became the 5th General of the Salvation Army in 1939, and held the post until 1946, when he retired. He spent the war years in London, and visited Australia in December, 1945. [3]
In his young days he had worked as a printer with newspapers in Raymond Terrace and Katoomba. He joined the Salvation Army in 1892, trained in Melbourne, was commissioned, and spent 18 years on training, literary and property work in Australia.
From 1911 to 1927 he served at the Salvation Army's International Headquarters in London. During this time he was mostly engaged as literary secretary to General Bramwell Booth.
He returned to Australia in 1927 and held positions including Chief Secretary, before being appointed, In 1933, Territorial Commander in South America, and in 1937 in Canada. He travelled to the United States, South America, Europe, Scandinavia and New Zealand.
He died on 9 April 1948 in the Salvation Army Home, Stanmore, New South Wales. [4] [5] He was buried on 12 April 1948 at Rookwood General Cemetery. [6] [7]
