Co-founder in 1883,[1] with Robert Philp KCMG (1851-1922) in the Burns Philp group of trading companies, which they built up, to include banking, insurance and shipping.
Queensland Insurance, Bankers & Traders Insurance, and Equitable Life and General Insurance were variosly established by Burns Philp from as early as 1886.[2] The three companies were merged to form QBE Insurance in the 1970's and Burns Philp remained a major sharholder until the 1990's. James' grandson, James David Oswald Burns (1928-2023) was the founding chairman and remained as chairman and director of QBE until some time after the sharholding was sold.

James Philp was born in Polmont, Stirlingshire, Scotland, United Kingdom in 1846 and baptised on the 20th of April. He was the son of David Burns and Margaret Shiress.[3][4]
He married Mary Heron Morris on on 31 March 1880 in Elsternwick, Victoria.[6]
James Burns died on 22 Aug 1923 in North Parramatta, New South Wales and was buried in the Burn's Family Cemetery, North Parramatta, New South Wales.
