In 1940, James was living in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee, United States.
James was an accomplished self-taught musician, who played the piano, organ, accordion and trombone. He was the drum major for the band at Peabody High School in Trenton, Tennessee, and was awarded the honor of valedictorian of his class.
James was raised in a very religious family, son of a minister, and he followed in his father's steps. He attended Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachee, Texas, and began a church in the small Middle Tennessee community of Hustburg. It is there where he met his wife Janie Matlock. He was a traveling evangelist for many years, settling in Dos Palos, California in 1966, where he pastored the First Assembly of God Church, later also owning an operating beauty salons in that town with his wife Janie.
James had one daughter, Danita. He died in 1994 after a one year battle with cancer.
