Son of Samuel and Abi (White) Brown, Jacob was raised as a Quaker. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and relocated to upstate New York in 1798.[1] Brown was initially commissioned in 1807 as a Captain in the 108th regiment of the New York Militia. Due to his distaste for frequent and expensive wastes by the government he was promptly promoted to the rank of Colonel. As the War of 1812 began, Brown was already a Brigadier General in the New York militia. He oversaw the Great Lakes defenses and was transferred to regular Army as Brigadier General after defeating the British at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor.
In the following year, he captured Fort Erie in Ontario and defeated the British again at the Battle of Chippawa. During the Battle of Lundy's Lane, a horrific and costly engagement for both sides, he was twice wounded. His final conquest was at the Siege of Fort Erie in 1814. His astounding successes earned him the Congressional Gold Medal.
Considering the actions above, it is almost unbelievable he was also a family man. He married Pamelia Williams in December of 1802 and they had four sons and five daughters. Gouverneur, Jacob, William, Nathan and Mary, Eliza, Pamela, Margaret, Katherine, were their names.
Four states have named counties after Gen. Brown: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. The towns of Brownville and Pamelia (which was set off from Brownville), New York are named after him and his wife.[2]
