On behalf of all the Leaders, thank you again for all you do and we look forward to you continuing to be a part of our collaborative and fun Project!
I have only just completed the Orphan Trail1 and joined the Profile Improvement, Bio Builders group. At the moment I am working on profiles in my own tree.I have been researching for 20 years and have accummulated lots of information in all sorts of files and containers as well as a tree on Ancestry. I used to visit Archive Centres and take photographs of relevant documents eg settlement certificates which I don't suppose I can add as an image because of copyright so I have a lot of transcribing to do. I did not use a gedcom file to download my tree and so I am gradually doing each profile. Unfortunately I have a very old iMac which will not allow me to use extensions like Sourcer so it is slow work as I am still learning about the style to use for each type of source. I do hope to buy a new computer soon but it is a long journey to the nearest Apple shop (the downside of living in Cornwall!!)
I do have evidence for some people linked to one of my ancestors which goes back to the 1600s so I am hoping to do Orphan Trail2 when I have gained a bit more experience. Also in the future I might join a county team the trouble would be chosing which one -I have ancestors in Kent, Sussex, Somerset, (Kent, Surrey and Middlesex London, Devon, Norfolk and apparently according to my DNA I have ancestors from Yorkshire which is news to me as I have not come across any so far!
As far as helping the project with unsourced profiles I am not sure how to go about this. For example is there a list to work from and if you add a source do you have to take it off the list or mark it in some way. I did come across a profile which had categories about missing sources. I added a birth source should I then remove that category on that profile? I am too new to suggest things the project can do in the future. I am still learning what it is doing now. I like getting involved in researching a very indepth profile so I am happy to do so for the England Project.
Thank you for contacting me. It makes me feel part of the team.
Barbara
Hi Barbara, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to upload images if you took the photographs yourself, especially if the photographs are of historical documents. It might be different for more recent documents.
You are doing the right thing adding your family members one at a time. I did the same thing when I graduated the OT and found a few mistakes. It’s a great opportunity to check your research and make sure all the connections are properly sourced. Also, having lived in Cornwall at one time, I know exactly what you mean about how far it is to the shops lol.
As far as County teams go, you can always join more than one, but it would be a good idea to join the ones covering the areas where most of the profiles you are going to be adding come from. Some of the counties leaders are more active than others so joining a few is not a bad idea. You don’t have to take part in any activities unless you want to, and it’s perfectly ok to be working on your own ancestors. Everything helps our one tree.
When you add a source to an unsourced profile, yes, you should go ahead and remove any “unsourced” categories and/ or stickers from the profile. Some of us find sourcing quite a relaxing thing to do when we want a bit of distraction from real life.
Many thanks for everything you are doing and I hope you continue to enjoy the project. Let me know when you have decided which county team(s) you would like to join and I’ll get you added.
We hope you are enjoying your time in the Orphan Trail Team; even if you are currently taking a Pause or waiting to be buddied up with a Trailblazer. We are pleased that you decided to join us and on behalf of the England Project, I would like to thank you for all your contributions towards the project's goals. Every single contribution you make helps improve English profiles!
We are looking forward to you joining one of our other collaborative and energetic teams once you complete the Trail.
I'd also like to share our annual Newsletter with you. You can read it here: England Project Newsletters. We hope you enjoy reading a bit about what has gone on in 2022 and what our Project has achieved.
The England Project Leaders like to touch base with each of our members every 6 months just to make sure everything is going well. There's no need to reply to this message unless you have something you'd like to let us know about (e.g. if you would like to provide us with feedback about the Trail or the project). We will be in touch with you again in the middle of next year when we do our annual check-in with project members.
On behalf of all the Leaders, I wish you a peaceful and productive 2023.
Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
Thank you for upgrading and signing our Honor Code.
Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.
Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.
Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
