General Sir Reginald Alexander Dallas Brooks, GCMG, KCB, KCVO, DSO, KStJ (22 August 1896 – 22 March 1966) was a British military commander who went on to become the 19th and longest-serving governor of Victoria, Australia.[1]

Reginald Alexander Dallas Brooks was born August 22, 1896 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He is a child of Dallas George Books and Violet Ruth Nissen Shepherd.[2][3]

On census night, 1901, Reginald is with both parents and two siblings in Portsmouth.[4]

Reginald married Muriel Violet Turner Laing toward the end of 1924 in St. George Hanover Square, London, England.[5]

Reginald passed away in 1966 in Frankston, Victoria, Australia.[6]

Research Notes

  • Wikipedia says that Reginald is an only child, there is a source but it appears to be a wartime record and doesn't reference his childhood or lack of siblings. The source is locked behind a paywall. However, the Australian Dictionary of Biography mentions that he's the only son of Dallas and Viloet, which appears correct. Census records would indicate that he has three sisters.
  • The 1901 census seems to have mislabelled his sister Dorian as a boy. Dorian is listed as a daughter of Dallas and Violet in the 1911 Census.
  • Reginald's name was entered in the 1911 census in the residence of his father, but at some point was crossed out.[7]
