Biography

European Aristocracy
Sir William Brereton was a member of the aristocracy in England.

William Brereton was born circa 1389 at Brereton, Cheshire, England.

He was the son of William Brereton, Kt.[1]

William married Alice Corbet, sister and heir of Richard Corbert,[1] of Leghton, in the barony of Caux.[2] She was the daughter of John Corbet.[3]

William and Alice had children:

  1. Sir William Brereton b. c 1410, d. 1484
  2. Ralph Brereton b. c 1408
  3. Isabel Brereton[4] b. c 1412
  4. Alice Brereton b. c 1414

William died at the seige of Harfleur, in 1415.[2]

On 24 February, 1410-11, a writ of livery was issued to William son of William Brereton, Kt, and Alice his wife, sister and heir of Richard Corbert kinsman and heir of Dame Mary le Roos, of the manor of Stapleford-Foulk, held in capite of the Earls of Chester, and in the hands of the Earl by the death of Richard, who died a minor without heirs of his body.[1]

After William's death, the widowed Alice married John Streteley, esq. [Inq p m 37 Henry VI][2] Alice died circa 1459.

Research Notes

On 2 June, 2016, a previous editor incorrectly cited "Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, Vol. I, p. 57-58" as the source for stating William Brereton's birth year was 1389. There is no mention of William's year of birth in that book.[5]

A Google search indicates the statement probably came from this website; the information was edited on 4 April, 2020, and as of 14 September, 2022, there is no source attributed for William's year or place of birth. However, the website states that William married Alice Corbet circa 1407, citing "Douglas Richardson, Plantagenet Ancestry [2004], p. 47; Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, (2011), Vol. I, p. 57-58; Douglas Richardson, Royal Ancestry, [2013] Vol. I, p. 176." Magna Carta Ancestry does not mention the date of William and Alice's marriage,[5] nor does the 2011 edition of Plantagenet Ancestry.[4]
