Biography

John de Brewes "(or Breuse, Brause, etc.), lord of Gower, Bramber, Findon, and Washington, Sussex, Buckingham and Bourton, Buckinghamshire, etc."[1]

John was born about 1197[2] to William de Briouse[3] and Maud de Clare, daughter of Richard de Clare, Knt., Earl of Hertford, and his wife Amice of Gloucester.[4]
John's father and grandmother (William's mother, Maud St Valéry) were imprisoned in the dungeons of Windsor Castle where they died in 1210, starved to death by order of King John.[5] In January 1218, John was released from captivity with his three brothers,[4] "due to the influence of their uncle, Gilbert de Clare".
In 1219, John married "Margaret of Wales", daughter of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales.[2]
John and Margaret ferch Llywelyn had four sons:
John had an eventful life. Richardson describes it:
Sometime before the end of 1220, he was probably placed in possession of the lordship of Gower. He subsequently repaired the castle of Swansea, by leave and counsel of his father-in-law, Prince Llywelyn. About 1220 he recovered the estates of his grandfather, William de Brewes, Sr., from his uncles, Reynold and Giles, including the barony of Bramber, Sussex, half the barony of Totnes, Devon, and the manor of Tetbury, Gloucestershire, but the Welsh lands remained with his uncle Reynold. He fought in France in 1230. About the year 1230, he confirmed the gifts of his predecessors to Sele Priory, and made additional grants, including the bridges of Bramber, five salt pits and five houses in New Shoreham. He also made a small grant of land at Gelli-wann and Gelli-drum to the canons of Talley Abbey, Carmarthenshire.[2]
John died shortly before 16 July 1232, having been thrown from his horse on his land in Bramber, Sussex, England.[2] His widow Margaret married (2) Walter de Clifford, Knt., before 2 November 1234 and had a daughter, Maud.[1]

Research Notes

The profiles for both of John's parents (William de Braose and Maud de Clare) include lengthy discussions of uncertainty, including Cawley's noting that while primary sources show William's wife was Matilda (Maud[7]), only secondary sources suggest she was Richard de Clare's daughter.[8] However, a discussion in soc.gen.medieval shares that "Dugdale's Baronage cites Pat Roll 17 John m 23 as giving this William de Braose as married to a younger daughter of Richard, Earl of Clare. This is Richard, earl of Hertford, b c1153. Her mother was Amicia, Countess of Gloucester."[9]

Richardson's entry in his 2013 Royal Ancestry for Maud de Clare includes the following information, which would appear to be conclusive circumstantial evidence in support of Maud de Clare as William's wife/John's mother:

"His [William's] wife, Maud, escaped when her husband was captured. She was imprisoned in Corfu Castle, and was restored to her father 28 July 1213. In June 1215 custody of the town of Buckingham, Buckinghamshire was granted to Maud's father, Earl Richard de Clare. In 1217 she had letters of conduct to come to England. In 1219 Maud sued her brother-in-law, Reynold de Brewes, for dower in the manors of Shoreham, Bramber, Beeding, Styning, Findon, Knepp (in Shipley), Horsham, Warnham, and Washington, Sussex."[10]
