Biography

On March 8, 1786, Michel Boutin was one of the seventy Acadien heads of families, the founders of Arichat Parish , that thanked the lieutenant governor of Cape Breton, J.F.W. DesBarres, "for the promise of land concessions, the permission to construct a church and school, and the request for tax exemptions."[1]

Son of Joseph Boutin and Francoise Pitre.

Baptised at Louisbourg 1751/10/11. [2]

Enumerated at one year of age at the bay of Espagnols (Spanish Bay), Isle Royale (present-day Cape Breton) in 1752. [3]

"Joseph Boutin, ploughman, native of la Cadie, aged 42 years
François Pitre, his wife, native of la Cadie, aged 42 years
Joseph, aged 20 years
Ambrose, aged 15 years
Bernard, aged 13 years
Paul, aged 9 years
Michel, aged one year
Ufrosine, aged 18 years
Marie, aged 6 years
Anne, aged 4 years.
The land was given to them by Messrs. Desherbiers and Prevost. They have been in the Colony thirty months and have rations for 33 mos."

Michel’s father died in 1755 and his mother probably died before the deportation in 1758. “The youngest son of Françoise, Michel Boutin, was only seven years of age in 1758, yet somehow managed to escape being deported. Inexplicably, he was at Nipisiguit (Bathurst) without his mother in 1761.”[4] [5]

Married about 1780, Charlotte Sauvage dit Forgeron, daughter of Pierre Sauvage dit Forgeron and Marie Jeanne Pinet, widow of Louis Fougere.

He resided in West Arichat, with his brothers-in-law, Joseph, Jean and Pierre Forgeron.

He was one of the first church wardens of the parish of Arichat in 1803.
