Biography

Nathaniel Blackburn was born in Pike County, Kentucky on August 7, 1839. He was the son of Thomas Blackburn and Sarah Thacker.

During the Civil War, Nathaniel enlisted in the Union Army on 11 November 1862 for a period of 3 years and started as a Corporal in Company D, 39th Kentucky Infantry Regiment.^[1] The 39th Kentucky Infantry Regiment was organized at Peach Orchard in Lawrence County, Kentucky, on November 18, 1862. It mustered in for a three-year enlistment on February 16, 1863, under the command of Colonel John Dils, Jr. Although the regiment was mounted, it was never designated as mounted infantry.^[2] He was described as 23 years old, fair complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, 5 feet 10 inches in height, and was occupied as a farmer. He deserted the army on 27 March 1863. He was Present in May & June of 1863, but demoted to a Private. He deserted the army again on 27 July 1863, from Prestonburg, Kentucky, and returned from desertion in Louisa , Kentucky, under proclamation of the President, 5 May 1865.^[3]

He passed away January 13, 1924 in Pike County, Kentucky.
