Biography
"Mr. Bartels was not a man of words. He never talked for talking sake, but only when he had something worth saying, and the good sound, common sense, the diligent attention to his duties, thorough integrity, straightforwardness, and business ability which distinguished his action in municipal affairs were quite as apparent in the concerns of his everyday life." -- Obituary in South Australian Register, 12 Nov 1878.[1]

Adolph Heinrich Fredrich Bartels was born on 29 Jul 1819 in Gilten, Hanover (now part of Landkreis Heidekreis in Niedersachsen, Germany) to parents Adolph Johann Cord Bartels and Wilhelmine Bartels.
In his early years he followed the trade of cigar maker in Hamburg, later moving to Breslau. Here he met the father of Mr. B. Seppelt, and in 1848 came out to Australia under contract, working at Seppeltsfield for a year. He then went to work for Messrs. Gerke and Rodemann as a cigar maker in Adelaide, and after a trip to the Victorian goldfields, he set up his own tobacconists shop. In 1865 he entered into partnership with G.H.C. Meyer as general agents and grain merchants. In 1866 Bartels was elected as representative of Hindmarsh ward on the City Council, a position he held for four years. In 1871 he was elected Mayor. He continued in partnership with Meyers until his death.[3]

Adolph passed away on Saturday, 9 Nov 1878 at age 58 after an illness associated with a tumor on the liver.[1]
